AAMD Contouring Session: Head and Neck – Structures We Can Now Spare
Overview
Sponsored by Elekta
This live contouring session will review several rare and under-appreciated critical structures of the head and neck region. These structures are often overlooked and sometimes omitted. Yet, with proper, reproducible delineation and newer radiotherapy modalities (e.g. IMRT, IMPT, etc), sparing of these organs at risk can provide substantial reductions in acute, subacute, and long-term morbidity for patients. This session will focus on practical contouring guidelines with a basis in consensus atlases and reviews.
Learner Outcomes:
- Explain the role of parallel structures in the head and neck and the rationale for sparing these organs from high doses of radiation
- Appreciate how to properly reproduce and delineate several critical structures of the head and neck region (i.e. oral cavity/tongue, pharyngeal constrictor muscles, larynx, submandibular glands, lips, etc.)
- Appreciate the enhanced ability to spare these structures that newer radiotherapy techniques (e.g. proton therapy) have provided
